A 26 unit housing development for Hastoe Housing Association in West Sussex received Passivhaus certification in 2015. Designed by PCKO Architects with consultancy from WARM: Low Energy Building Practice, the 3.5 million scheme provides much needed affordable homes for the local community. The houses are brick-clad, with a double stud timber frame and have been designed to create a modern interpretation of the local Sussex vernacular. Materials were chosen carefully to allow typical builders, with little Passivhaus construction experience, to build to the standards required using traditional techniques. The Passivhaus project was a first for contractors PMC Construction, so it was necessary for the design team to work very closely together when developing construction details, and to utilise the Passivhaus experience that Hastoe, WARM and PCKO have garnered over the past few years, having worked on a number of successful schemes.
