Mole have worked with Broadland Housing to develop designs for 2 affordable housing developments of 2 and 3-bed houses in Norfolk, both are now complete and include four houses to Passivhaus standards. Materials draw on a locally sourced selection of clay pantiles, brick and naturally finished timber boards. Careful North/South orientation and solar shading makes best use of passive solar gain. In addition, a compact form, restriction of overall window size with predominantly south facing openings, high levels of insulation, heat recovery ventilation and extensive use of timber for primary structure, all combine to reduce energy loss.
