Belvoir Cottage

Belvoir Cottage has been designed as a modern version of a traditional Kentish cottage with dormer windows and catslide roof. It has, within the constraints of the LPA, been designed using low energy PH methodology meeting the PHPP criteria. The foundation system used was the first Isoquick PHI certified installation in the UK. A novel portal all timber I-beam construction method is used which reduces thermal bridging to a minimum. The majority of components used have PHI certification.

Bushbury Hill Primary School

Bushbury Hill primary school was one of the first projects in the country to achieve Passivhaus certification in February 2012. The school was built to the same budget and completed in the same time frame as a traditional build. Due to the challenging nature of the site, there was extensive consultation with the school and its neighbours throughout the design and construction process.

Canolfan Hyddgen

Canolfan Hyddgen - built in 2008 & occupied in January 2009 - is the UKs 1st certified Passivhaus office building located in Machynlleth, Wales. As a BREEAM excellent Multi-occupancy building with over 15 tenants it provides Bi lingual IT provision for the adjacent school, night classes, adult learning, meeting rooms, drop-in centre and council service point. JPW led the design team and partnered with the Client to satisfy a brief which demanded a building which could maximise revenue through flexible/continous use and minimise running costs via energy efficiency to create a environmentally & financially sustainable facility. Consultation with stakeholders at the earliest opportunity embedded a passivhaus approach into a design focused on local natural aesthetics & materials. On going monitoring, regular servicing and induction of building users has enabled continual reduction of energy consumption below predicted for the last 4 years.

Carnegie Village, Leeds Metropolitan University

As the first student accommodation building in the UK to be accredited to the PassivHaus standard, Carnegie Village adopts a ground-breaking design to reduce the carbon footprint of the Universitys student accommodation. As well as energy saving features throughout the scheme, the project itself is made up of 13% recycled materials. The scheme achieved a BREEAM excellent rating.

This project began with a brief to create a new, energy efficient home on a tight site occupied by a derelict garage. Early in the design process, RDA introduced the client to Passivhaus. From thereon in, achieving Passivhaus certification became one of the driving forces, and goal for the project.

Due to tricky site conditions and planning constraints, this 2 bed bungalow had to be built on one level which resulted in a challenging building form with a high ratio of heat loss area to useable floor space. The design team successfully overcame these challenges resulting in the building meeting the strict Passivhaus standards and an average U value for walls, floor and roof of 0.08W/m2K.
